The New Zealand Curriculum specifies eight essential learning areas, which describe in broad terms the knowledge, and understanding, which all students need to acquire. All seven learning areas are essential for a broad and balanced education. They are inter-related so any activity, which students engage in, will draw on more than one learning area.
• ENGLISH • MATHEMATICS • SCIENCE • TECHNOLOGY • SOCIAL STUDIES • THE ARTS • HEALTH AND PHYSICAL WELL-BEING • LEARNING LANGUAGES
The New Zealand Curriculum specifies five key competencies to be developed by all students across the whole curriculum throughout the years of schooling.
• MANAGING SELF • RELATING TO OTHERS • PARTICIPATING AND CONTRIBUTING • THINKING • USING LANGUAGE, SYMBOLS AND TEXTS
There are approximate parallels between levels of achievement and class and age bands. It is not expected that all students of the same age will achieve at the same level at the same time. The level statements within the New Zealand National Curriculum subject documents assist teachers to identify a students’ progressive development, therefore provide the most appropriate programmes. All teaching will be gender-inclusive and be sensitive to the multi-cultural diversity of New Zealand. Students and Staff will be aware of the Treaty of Waitangi implications. |
